Let’s set aside for a moment that our trip to magnificent Hallstatt involved a lot of prep work and help from Oliver, our Viking Cruise Director, so that we can just soak in the spectacular view. To witness the hills alive in autumn Austria, if for only 90 minutes, was worth every breathless Bavarian moment. Here are 5 must-see reasons to find your way there someday.
#1. Lake Hallstatt
I am a lover of lakes, and while I happen to think we have some of the most beautiful right here in Oregon, I did leave a piece of my heart at Lake Hallstatt. Amazing Austrian mountains reflecting on a crystal clear canvas. Boats of all shapes and sizes. Scores of real-life majestic swans. Seriously, swans?!!! Just wait until I propose “Importing Swans” to the Board of Directors at our sailing club next month. Coming to Eugene, OR in 2018, Swan Lake!
#2 Alpine Village (Old Town)
Of course, a lake this pretty must have a matching Alpine Village as it’s accessory. Can you imagine it any other way? Well, lucky for all adventurers with a a case of wanderlust, Hallstatt does have the world’s most adorable Alpine Village. Think of fantastic shops full of hidden surprises kissing the water’s edge. Restaurants with decks that drape across the water. Welcome to Fairytale Land.
#3 Hallstatt is Pristine
We could not get over how clean, sweet and organized this magical place was. Even the wood piles were carefully stacked to perfection.
#4 Salt Mine Tram
Unbelievably, we did not have time to take the Salt Mine Tram up to the Skywalk!!! Oh well, a Windlasse always leaves something behind to re-discover later. If I am ever fortunate enough to make it back to Austrian paradise, I am going straight to the ski shop first to buy the beautiful blue Alpine coat that slipped through my fingers and wear it on this crazy-cool tram! Oh yes I am, Sam I am.
#5 Hallstatt Welcomes Windlasses and Windlads
Anchor kids will find it easy to fit in here. Everyone was very friendly and very happy.
There is another big reason to visit Hallstatt, Austria. The journey there and back is part of the gift.
Tune in later this week for a few more pictures of our Alpine escapades and the glorious road to Hallstatt, Austria and back again.
Hope you can find some fantasy of your own this week.
