I have good news, a little river cruise tip. If you want to picture yourself here too, but without a moderate bike ride like we took with NextBike, Viking River Cruises offers an optional excursion in the Wachau Valley using electric bicycles from the Krems port. We originally didn’t book this excursion because we weren’t certain we could count on the weather in October, however, we found out later that you can reserve a spot right up until 5pm the evening before. Back to our journey…
I covered quite a bit in yesterday’s blog post about our magical day in Wachau Valley Austria, but wanted to share more pictures. Not included are the photos of where my uncle paused to snap the perfect picture and lost his phone over a locals fence, and then my Mom climbed in to retrieve it for him. I remarked to her, “I’ve never seen a fence you couldn’t climb over Mom” to which she replied “or under!” I guess that is a Weber family trait – we can’t be fenced in. What’s the word we use for it Uncle Sam, is it “going rogue?”
Naturally, with less than 30 minutes to spare to return to the boat for departure, when our taxi driver asked if we wanted to make a quick stop for wine tasting, we said of course let’s go!
The entire Wachau Valley is dressed in vineyards, and we definitely would like to return someday to spend more time exploring this area. On this day though, our driver took us to the best! Domane Wachau received the coveted 100 point honor on their 2015 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Kellerberg.
We found the traditional apricot liquor there too.
A few more photos from a spectacular bike ride…
I can’t believe I don’t have any pictures of the apricot strudel! It’s a specialty in the Wachau Valley and we found it at a small restaurant. To be honest, we recognized early on in our trip that strudel would be a sort of “theme” so we set out to enjoy one in every port – you know, just to compare a little.
We eventually made our way back to the boat in Krems, just in time to cast off for the afternoon aboard the Viking Egil, where we were treated with a delicious warm raspberry tea and views that knocked our socks off.
Some found the Danube cruise to be romantic. A big thank you to the Grandpa and the Dad that made it possible for the Windlasses to take this trip too!
I love how you can always find some nautical in life wherever you go…
Way too much fun for one day. Time to get cozy inside the boat and be treated to a fine meal. Thanks Viking River Cruises for an unforgettable day. As Corina says… “jet lag lasts only a few days, but memories last forever.”
Auf wiedersehen Austria. See you tomorrow morning in Regensburg.
