“I’m so sorry I haven’t gotten back to you with the meeting summary yet. I had such a nuts day.” I confess to a colleague waiting for information via e-mail. Unfortunately, I am moving pretty fast these days at home and at work, and surrendering has become part of the status quo. It doesn’t help that I always have this sinking feeling when I haven’t measured up, regardless of whether the “ball drop” was out of my control or not. Needless to say, I was not prepared for his reply… “No worries. Have a good weekend. Nuts is the new normal!” Mic drop. I’m pretty sure at this point my colleague has no idea that his response is about to inspire a “Sundae Blog Post,” that I think his quote “nuts is the new normal” should become an entire Movement, AND that he has saved me from an evening of telling myself I don’t measure up for not getting everything done. If you’re still with me, follow along for a tale of how surrender led to “Nuts Is The New Normal” Sundaes…
Lots of people I know swear by warm baths and hot tea to fix their problems. While these are great options, if I’m being totally honest, it’s “hot fudge and panna” I turn to in a pinch. In my playbook, pretty much ANY wrong can be righted with a good sundae topped with whipped cream and nuts. When my kids were young and my folks were gone for a month, I literally had ice cream EVERY SINGLE DAY until they returned and I survived and recovered to normal. Naturally, I expected the same “Sundae Self-Love” last Friday to dissolve the week’s worries, but this time it didn’t.
It’s been awhile since I’ve given in to McDonald’s fast food, and I realized moments too late, that I had forgotten to ask for nuts and whipped cream with my hot fudge sundae. It was crushing. I vowed from this point on, not to waste any more calories on ice cream that doesn’t make the cut. Which means, I’m going to need to become a lot more prepared. Enter BYON (Bring Your Own Nuts).
“Nuts Is The New Normal” Sundaes
What you will need:
- Good Ice Cream (I’m a solid Breyer’s fan, unless there is gelato nearby)
- Respectable Hot Fudge (Euphoria Chocolate Company has the sauce and my heart)
- Great Nuts! (We tested with two kinds of Sahale Snacks and Doug’s Nuts – all were delicious)
- Panna (English translation=whipped cream. I was once lucky enough to live in Italy for four months, and Italians often order their gelato “con panna,” which means to have whipped cream on top. It’s delicious. Please be careful not to order “con pene” as this has a much different connotation. For more information about that, you can ask my Mom.) For this recipe, I just used a can of whipped cream.
Step 1: Fill your bowl with ice cream. (You don’t need too much, because this is a rich dessert)
Step 2: Add your choice of nuts.
Step 3: Drizzle with warm hot fudge.
Step 4: Top with panna and a sprinkle of more nuts.
Step 5: Dig in, and bring your snack nuts in the car for the next time you’re having a “sundae on the run” day.
They were all good, but my daughter’s choice was the Maple Glazed from Sahale Snacks, and that turned out to be my favorite combination too.
Speaking of nuts news… I want to give a shout out to beautiful Terri Bowden, who just retired and celebrated Day 1 by hanging party lights. Congratulations Sweet Terri! Best wishes for you and Gary on your next adventures!
I think we should all spend some time under party lights this weekend in her honor, and toast this great gal!
Whether you are Nuts or Normal, Happy June Y’All,
