These cute girls know something the rest of us don’t…
It’s not about how fast you have to be to run a relay race, but they are quick. It’s not about how joy makes the best makeup, although their smiles do tell a sweet story. It’s that they are keenly, on all occasions, aware of the NBTs. If you haven’t heard of the NBT yet, you must have let your Disney life lapse, and it’s time to get reaquainted.
With Eyes Wide Open, my middle school daughter and her friends explore the deep, complex world of love and adventure that comes with rites of passage. While I don’t really want to turn the clock back that far in my own life, I am happy to be on the fringe of “hip and cool” with them. It’s made me start to look at the discoveries in my own life, whether new to the world or not, as my own personal Next Big Things. So here it goes…a few Windlasse NBTs.
#1. Rachel Platten – Better Place
Image and link to video from ChartShaker.com
Everything about this album cover and enchanting song has me transfixed. You can have a listen on YouTube here. I’m pretty sure the lyrics were written about couple love, since it’s already predicted to be a summer wedding theme song, but to me, it’s an ode to the mini goldendoodle that changed our lives from the day he came through our doors on all fours. For the kids, he’s the gentle bearcub brother that licks away the messes of the day so they can begin again. To my husband, he’s the guy who is always around to watch a game with. In my life, he’s the cuddly confidant that sees my heart for the good and best intentions, even where and when I fall short. Speaking of animal friendships, you can follow this link to a fascinating article from Time Magazine about the science of animal friendship. The end has a note saying the research doesn’t include puppy love, but I don’t think that’s true, you?
#2. Gym Tote
Image and product found here at REI.com
My amazing REI bag is like having a best friend that really carries her own weight. It has different sections for storing damp clothes, lots of pockets, and has been going the distance everywhere with me…to work, on trips, to track meets. As the days start to blend in to summer, you never know when you might need a good bag on your side. My favorite tote was a gift from a friend, and it’s not longer available online, but there are some other great choices to consider, including the one pictured above. The bags from FitMark are also very popular.
#3. Tomato and Turquoise
Ever since seeing a cute pic on Pinterest, I have been obsessed with the color combination of “tomato and turquoise” to bring some pop back in to cloudy spring days.
If you want to join me in this color movement, I’ve done some of the work for you. My tomato red dress came from Stitch Fix, which you can read more about here. They offer jewelry, clothes and accessories. As of April, you can now request shoes too! I love the turquoise fringe purse in their ad below.
I also found a similar dress 40% off from Ann Taylor…

The faux turquoise gradient necklace in Seabreeze I purchased from a Premiere Designs party.
I’m also looking at these braided tomato sandals from Forever21. At $8.90 they are a steal!

#4. O2COOL Mist n Sip Water Bottle
Image and product from Dick’s Sporting Goods
This misting water bottle is an NBT our daughter found at a softball tournament. It’s all kinds of fun meets functional, and comes in a variety of colors. You really just have to try it to appreciate it.
There you have it, a few things to get your creative juices flowing on your own NBTs as we head in to the weekend. Lots more blog posts are in the pipeline, so check back often!
